Professor Justin Willis from the History Department at Durham University has joined other scholars and researchers in examining the life and legacy of the late Raila Odinga, one of Kenya’s most influential political figures.

Raila Odinga, who played a central role in shaping Kenya’s political landscape for decades, is being remembered for his enduring commitment to democracy, reform, and national unity. Professor Willis, known for his extensive research on East African political history, is contributing to a collective academic effort to analyze Odinga’s impact on Kenya’s governance, social movements, and regional politics.
The research aims to provide a nuanced understanding of Odinga’s political journey—from his early activism and imprisonment to his leadership in opposition politics and his influence on Kenya’s democratic evolution. Scholars involved in the project are expected to publish their findings in upcoming academic journals and public forums, offering historical perspectives on Odinga’s contributions to Kenya and Africa’s broader political narrative.
