The President of Somalia Hassan Sheikh Mohamud (HSM) annulled the laws of citizenship and nationality.
“If you are holding a foreign passport, you are not a Somali,” HSM declared at a public function.
He has now directed that all Somali citizens with foreign passports to be treated as ‘foreigners’ who must apply for visa through a new controversial e-visa system to visit their homeland.
Over 2m Somali diaspora holding foreign passports (such as British, American, Italian, Canadian passports) affected.
Condemnations of the president’s radical pronouncement mounting.
Experts say HSM’s executive fiat flouts provisional constitution, overturns established legal norms, and breaches fundamental rights of Somalis to travel to their country of birth unhindered.
