Dr. Fred Matiang’i, was once a prominent figure in Kenyan politics as the Cabinet Secretary for ICT, Education, Interior and the most powerful Prime Cabinet Secretary who led to the pushing out of William Ruto and is believed to have been the acting Deputy President when Uhuru fell out with Ruto.

Dr. Matiangi has retreated into a noticeable silence after his dramatic launch of his 2027 presidential ambitions which has left more casualties with nominated senator Gloria Orwoba getting dismissed for associating with him and Gusii based ODM politicians losing touch with fellow party members who questioned their loyalty. This shift raises questions about the factors influencing his decision to step back from the limelight.
Matiang’i’s tenure as Interior CS was marked by both acclaim and controversy. While he was lauded for his firm stance on security matters and his efforts to streamline government services like effectiveness and strictness in exams management, he also faced criticism for alleged human rights abuses and the heavy-handed enforcement of law and order. These controversies may be playing a significant role in his current low profile.

Our political landscape is notoriously unforgiving, and past actions can have a lasting impact on one’s future prospects. Matiang’i is likely aware that any attempt to re-enter politics would be met with intense scrutiny and that his past controversies would be weaponized by his opponents. In fact, he knows very well that his opponents will have easier ways to campaign against him, he carries all the torture baggage on behalf of Uhuru Kenyatta.
Another challenge facing Matiang’i is the difficulty of re-entering politics without being perceived as a puppet of powerful individuals or political factions. The Kenyan public is increasingly wary of politicians who appear to be beholden to special interests, and Matiang’i would need to demonstrate his independence and commitment to serving the people if he hopes to regain their trust. He will have to prove that he is not running on behalf of Uhuru Kenyatta. Raila Odinga lost some votes for being perceived as Uhuru Kenyatta’s puppet and Matiang’I is seen as Kenyatta’s errand boy.

Matiang’i’s decision to maintain a low profile could be a strategic move to allow the political dust to settle and to reassess his options. By staying out of the fray, he can avoid making any missteps that could further damage his reputation. He may also be waiting for the right opportunity to re-emerge on the political scene, perhaps with a new message or a different approach.
Ultimately, Matiang’i’s retreat into silence suggests a period of deep reflection and strategic re-evaluation. The path forward for him is fraught with challenges, but it is not insurmountable. By acknowledging his past mistakes, demonstrating his independence, and articulating a clear vision for the future, he may yet be able to carve out a new role for himself in Kenyan politics. For now, the nation waits and watches. Wamunyoro is also developing cold feet and is not ready to directly clear the mountain for Matiangi.
