The promise of a modern stadium in Awendo, Ugenya Constituency, Siaya County, was met with excitement and hope five years ago. The project, intended to boost local sports and provide a community hub, has since become a symbol of stalled development and broken promises.
In 2019, contractors arrived, and the site was fenced off, seemingly signaling the commencement of construction. However, this initial activity proved to be the only tangible progress made to date. The allocated funds appear to have vanished, leaving behind a bare field enclosed by a perimeter fence.
A silent Mp. And Vanishing funds.
The silence from the area’s Member of Parliament, Hon. David Ouma Ochieng, has only fueled the growing frustration and suspicion among residents. The MP’s last public statement regarding the stadium’s progress was made weeks before the 2022 general elections, conveniently timed to coincide with his re-election campaign. Since then, the issue has been conspicuously avoided.
Despite repeated attempts by concerned citizens and local media to seek clarification, Hon. Ochieng has remained tight-lipped, offering no explanation for the project’s stagnation or the whereabouts of the allocated funds. This lack of transparency has led to widespread speculation and accusations of mismanagement.
The Awendo stadium saga raises critical questions about accountability and transparency in development projects. How can such a significant project be abandoned with seemingly no consequences? Where did the allocated funds go, and who is responsible for the oversight? The people of Ugenya deserve answers.
This situation serves as a stark reminder of the importance of civic engagement and the need for elected officials to be held accountable for their promises. The dream of a stadium in Awendo may still be alive, but it requires immediate action and a commitment to transparency from those in power.

What is the way forward?
Addressing this issue requires a multi-pronged approach:
- Increased Transparency: Hon. David Ochieng must address the concerns of his constituents and provide a detailed account of the project’s status and the utilization of funds.
- Independent Investigation: An independent audit should be conducted to determine the whereabouts of the allocated funds and identify any instances of mismanagement or corruption.
- Community Involvement: The local community should be actively involved in the planning and oversight of any future attempts to revive the stadium project.
- Accountability: Those found responsible for the project’s failure should be held accountable for their actions.
The people of Ugenya deserve the stadium they were promised. It is time for action, transparency, and accountability to turn this deferred dream into a reality.
