Today marks a major milestone for Kisumu County on the journey toward a smarter, more sustainable future. The signing of a Memoranda of Understanding between the County Government of Kisumu and The World Smart Cities Alliance, represented by Mr. Jaewon Peter Chun, Chairman and President of the World Smart Cities Forum (WSCF), formalized Kisumu’s entry into the Africa Smart Cities Alliance (ASCA).

Kisumu governor Prof Anyang Nyong’o has been appointed as the inaugural Chairman of this transformative initiative, which will guide African cities towards inclusive, tech-driven urban development. Together with WSCF, he will be laying the foundation for Kisumu to become a model city not just in Kenya, but across the continent.

From August 20–22, 2025, Kisumu will host the first-ever ASCA Convention an international gathering of innovators, investors, city leaders, and development partners, aimed at shaping the future of smart, climate-resilient cities. The second leg of the convention will take place in South Korea later in the year, signalling a powerful Africa–Asia collaboration.

Mr. Chun shared global best practices from London, Busan, and Incheon, and emphasized the importance of blending local innovation with cutting-edge global technologies like AI, 3D prototyping, and digital governance. This aligns perfectly with Kisumu’s long-standing commitment to equity, environmental responsibility, and homegrown innovation.

The partnership with WSCF also opens up new avenues for international investment, with strong interest already shown by stakeholders from the U.S., India, and the Middle East. As part of the broader East African Community integration agenda, our smart city agenda will also support the revitalization of Lake Victoria’s waterways and the development of regional logistics corridors.

This achievement reflects years of strategic investment, policy reforms, and collaborative governance. We are not only embracing the future we are helping to define it.

Kisumu is rising. And the world is taking notice.
